Mexican Independence Day and Tequila

garveywholesalebeverage

It’s September! Which means Mexican Independence Day is around the corner. It is the mistaken belief of many that Mexican Independence Day is on Cinco De Mayo, but May 5th commemorates El Día de la Batalla de Puebla, which is a historic battle in which Mexico temporarily defeated the invading French army. Cinco de Mayo is not a widely celebrated holiday in Mexico, and began in the US as a way to raise awareness of Mexican heritage and History. Which brings us back to Mexican Independence Day, which commemorates Mexico’s Independence from Spain in 1810.

In Mexico the celebration begins on the eve of their independence with El Grito, to pay tribute to El Grito De Dolores, or the Cry of Dolores which is a famous speech by Father Miguel Hidalgo. People will gather in town squares all over Mexico to hear their town leaders recreate the moment Miguel Hidalgo gave this speech to rally up troops and fight for their freedom. The speech ends with everyone cheering “Viva Mexico!” and then the fun begins.

The celebration is one of Mexico’s biggest and most important of the year. Festivities include decorations, fireworks, parades, food and of course Tequila! Tequila is very important to Mexico and has a rich history that dates back to the 16th century. If you think all tequilas are the same you would be wrong. Even the region where the blue agave plant grows can change the taste of tequila. Many tequila drinkers may even have a preference as to where their tequila is made. So if you think you don’t like to drink tequila, you may not have found the right one yet.

Mexican Independence Day is a great opportunity to have a tequila tasting party and learn more about this spirit. Garvey Wholesale Beverage has an assortment of Tequilas to suit your tastes. Pick up some Cazadores, Corralejo or Casamigos to get your party started. Those with a beer and wine license won’t be left out of the celebrations; La Quinta Agave Wine is a great way to serve margaritas and other tequila based cocktails. So grab some salt, margarita glasses and your favorite tequila at Garvey Wholesale and start planning your celebrations.
