The Tale of Three Tequilas

Most tequila brands offer a variety of different types of tequilas. Blanco, Reposado, Oro, Anejo, and Extra Anejo are usually the varietals that are presented. These different classifications of tequila are based on the process in which they are made. All subcategories of tequila fall under 2 general categories of tequila: 100% agave tequila and mixed tequila. 100% agave tequila embodies the true taste of agave because it does not contain any other flavors or ingredients. It is usually enjoyed by itself so the sweet flavors of the drink can be tasted. Mixed tequila, on the other hand, is typically 51% agave tequila and 49% a mixture of other plants, flavorings, water, sugar, or colorings. It is usually used in mixed drinks and cocktails. Then there are the more specific subcategories:

Blanco: This is the purest form of tequila because it is unaged and uncolored, so the true flavors of the agave are present and intense. If aged at all, they are put in glass or steel tanks for no more than 60 days.  There is natural sweetness to the drink from the agave. Blanco tequila can be either 100% agave or mixed.

Oro/Gold: This is a mixed tequila that is primarily used for mixed drinks. It is unaged tequila that contains caramel colors and flavorings. It is sweet and smooth, so it’s a popular choice for shots or frozen drinks.

Reposado/Rested: This type of tequila is rested for over two months, but less than a year in wooden barrels or casks. The aging allows the tequila to have a distinct flavor, and can be either 100% agave or mixed.

Anejo: Anejo tequila means old tequila. The tequila is aged in wooden barrels for at least one year, but no more than three. The aging process gives the tequila the golden colors and strong charred flavors.

Extra Anejo: Some brands offer this category, which is tequila that is aged in wooden barrels for a minimum of three years. The color becomes much darker and with so much more flavors that it needs to be diluted with a little bit of water to lower the alcohol content.

Here at Garvey Wholesale Beverage, we offer a wide variety of tequila selections. For the month of April, we have displayed a very unique tequila brand, Querido Viejo, in our showroom.

Querido Viejo offers Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo tequilas; it is produced in Jalisco, the Tequila region in Mexico, using agaves that are 7-12 years old. These tequilas use a very interesting ingredient that sets them apart from other tequilas; a love story. The founder of Querido Viejo created the tequila as a metaphor of her own beautiful love story. Every aspect of the tequila was dedicated to that love, the passion, the intensity, and the goodness that was experienced. It was her goal to create a tequila that could be the equivalent of those emotions and dedicate to him as a symbol of their love. From the process of making and aging the drink to the design and packaging of the final product, the entire process and result serves to symbolize the powerful feelings that they had shared. The result of that is a tequila that tastes unique and special. The founder hopes that those who enjoy this tequila can feel the passion and desire to love, because a love like that is too great not to share.

Make sure to stop by this month to check out our life sized display of the unique, wooden Querido Viejo bottle in our showroom! We also have a demo on April 24th from 12:30 - 4:30 featuring the tequilas for you to try!
